Can I eat cheese?
Of course you can eat cheese, but should you?
So if you are going 100% plant based the answer to this question is NO.
Cheese is an animal product, it is calorie dense, addictive, high in saturated fats, and not good for you. But yes you can eat cheese if you choose to.
A question often asked is “How can I help such-and-such person make better nutrition choices”? This question comes most often based on a concern for the well being of others. The answer is Knowledge. Ignorance is bliss and Knowledge is a privilege that gives us the power to make informed decisions. And also the privilege to feel appropriately guilty when making unhealthy ones, like eating cheese.
If you think you can eat a plant based diet except you can’t do it without having cheese, by all means eat the plants and keep the cheese in moderation.
Cheese is something I’ve struggled with. So how am I handling it now? I have a little bit of cheese twice a week most of the time. The three cheeses that I keep on hand are an Italian cheese mix, cotija, and feta. Just a little feta on my greek salad, a little cotija on my black bean tacos, a little Italian cheese mix on the pizza veg etc. When I add cheese to a meal it’s typically less than 1/2 an ounce, I purchase strongly flavored cheeses so a little goes a long way. Life is about compromises sometimes, and I do not have guilt over this one.
