Target Heart Rate During Exercise

I am going to explain why exercise is hard and how to figure out how strenuously to work out and why you shouldn’t work beyond your maximum heart rate EVER!

Cardiac Perfusion
This is medical speak for your heart being supplied blood. Imagine your heart is a sponge, when you squeeze a sponge you cannot use it to absorb water, in fact all the water is wrung out. Likewise when your heart is squeezing i.e. pumping blood it does not receive blood. Only when the heart relaxes does blood flow into the heart muscle. The more rapidly your heart beats the more blood it needs, and the less time it spends getting it.

The space between the lines represents the time when the lower heart chambers are not contracting.

This is an approximation, I’m a nurse not a cardiologist. From this you can see the problem.

What is your maximum heart rate? 220-your age.

For me that’s about 175. But hey my heart likes blood so I don’t work out at 175 bpm as you can see from the picture that doesn’t allow for a lot of cardiac perfusion. I prefer to do my cardio at around 70-80% of maximum, for me 124-140 bpm.
